Providence Health & Services Occupational Therapist - Inpatient in Walla Walla, Washington


Providence is calling an Occupational Therapist Inpatient (Day Shift, 0.0 FTE) to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Consistently demonstrates adherence to the principles and requirements outlined in the Commitments and Compliance Integrity Program and any other organization or departmental materials related to compliance with laws, regulatory requirements.

  • Follows established policies and procedures to identify and reduce the risks of acquiring or transmitting infection.

  • Communicates effectively with patients, physicians and staff in a professional manner.

  • Provides clear, concise, pertinent reports/information.

  • Evaluates, plans, develops, implements, and directs occupational therapy services in accordance with current rules and regulation of current applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations to assure that the highest degree of quality patient/resident care is maintained at all times.

  • Reviews medical record regarding request for occupational therapy and/or physician’s referral.

  • Evaluates patient/resident based upon clinical diagnosis to determine treatment and frequency needs.

  • Develops patient/resident goals, including time frames; develop, implement and revise the patient/resident plan of care according to Occupational Therapy guidelines.

  • Recognizes and reports signs\symptoms of abuse and neglect for all ages of patients served.

  • Implements patient care procedures/treatment in accordance with current rules and guidelines, assuring patient privacy.

  • Documents all patient care using appropriate documentation format and standards/regulations that govern occupational therapy services.

  • Reassesses patient’s progress toward goals and plan of care revising when appropriate.

  • Uses age specific standards, policies and procedures, and guidelines to conduct the educational activities listed below: Provides patient information and educational services; Discusses goals and treatment plan with patient and family; Utilizes appropriate teaching methods and/or referrals to ensure patient/family educational needs are met.

  • Develops and maintains a positive rapport with physicians’ offices and their staff which would promote use of St. Mary Medical Center Rehabilitation Therapy Services.

  • Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining an ongoing quality improvement program, including implementation of appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies for Rehabilitation Therapy Services.

  • Assures that department meets the business and organizational budgetary goals including productivity expectations.

  • Participates in educational activities and clinical studies including the presentation of one in-service per year.

  • Utilizes the appropriate leadership skills in delegating, organizing and educating techs, assistants, staff, students and volunteers.

  • Communicates with and educates physicians or other related health care personnel on occupational therapy services, including the response of their patient/resident and recommendations for further care or needs.

  • Adheres to safety precautions including proper hazardous wastes and proper sharps disposal.

  • Monitors safety of all equipment.

  • Develops and participates in programs designed for in-service education, on-the-job training and orientation classes for new employees.

  • Participates in an effective orientation program that orients new employees to the facility, its policies and procedures and to his/her job positions and duties as directed.

  • Participates in mentoring program for new and/or less experienced personnel.

  • Participates in departmental personnel performance evaluations.

  • Ensures Business Office receives appropriate and accurate charges for services rendered.

  • Expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Maintains appropriate education record keeping requirements of when classes were held, subject matter, attendance, lecturer, according to department standards.

  • Attends and participates in discharge planning or care conferences as appropriate.

  • Provides written and/or oral reports of the department projects or committee functions as required.

  • Evaluates and implements recommendations from various committees as they pertain to Rehabilitation Therapy Services.

  • Represents the department at, and participates in departmental meetings, as well as meetings with Administration, medical and hospital staff in assisting in planning therapy sessions.

  • Assists in developing, implementing, coordinating and reviewing occupational therapy policies and procedures, job descriptions and recommend changes as appropriate.

  • Maintains and cleans treatment and support areas as needed.

  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for occupational therapy services, including guidance and appropriate utilization of professional occupational therapy students, OTAs, Techs, Volunteers and support staff.

  • Employee completes all tasks and duties accurately and timely within assigned shift. Demonstrates initiative to perform job duties autonomously.

  • Attends mandatory and other education offerings per department and hospital requirements. May assist with education on the unit.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Occupational Therapy

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy

  • Current Occupational Therapy (OT) licensure in Washington State

  • Oregon State licensure may be required if needed in the service area

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate through the American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree on Occupational Therapy or Ph.D. Occupational Therapy.

  • Maintain certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)

  • One (1) year experience in an Occupation Therapist capacity in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, or other related medical field
