Providence Health & Services Surgical Technologist - Operating Room in Walla Walla, Washington
Providence is calling a Surgical Technologist (Operating Room, Variable Shift, 1.0 FTE) to Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington. In this position you will:

Participates in hospital and department specific practices to maintain a clean, safe and comfortable environment for patients and staff.
Maintains the security and confidentiality of data and information used in performance of his/her daily duties conforming to hospital policy, laws and regulations as appropriate.
Follows established policies and procedures to identify and reduce the risks of acquiring or transmitting infection.
Maintains positive working relationships and fosters a cooperative work environment.
Communicates clearly and appropriately using age specific standards with patients and families of patients.
Communicates in a professional and appropriate manner when interacting with colleagues, supervisors, peers, physicians, etc. Friendly, positive customer relations required.
Provides clear, concise, pertinent reports/information.
Works with circulating nurse, gathering all necessary equipment and supplies to meet patient and surgeon needs according to policy and procedure for all surgical specialties offered at PSMMC.
Maintains an adequate supply of instruments and supplies to meet the patient’s changing needs.
Recognizes and reports signs/symptoms of abuse and neglect for all ages of patients served.
Passes correct instruments, supplies and sutures as needed by surgeon.
Assists in draping patient and operative area.
Anticipates surgeon’s needs throughout procedures.
Correctly handles specialty equipment and instruments.
Labels all medication syringes and basins used during surgery.
Sponges or suctions the operative site. Retracts tissue for exposure at the operative site and assists with irrigation under immediate supervision of licensed healthcare practitioner.
Assists Circulating Nurse in proper identification of specimens.
At the end of the surgery, assists in applying dressings and preparing patient for transfer to carrier and PACU.
Willing to assist and accept assistance from appropriate staff members.
Shares the responsibility of general departmental duties with all OR team members, including but not limited to: preparation for next day’s cases, checking, cleaning and restocking OR rooms, general cleaning, checking outdated supplies and instruments, putting away instruments and supplies as received and sharing responsibility in maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
Participates in evaluation of new products, methods or equipment to determine quality.
Demonstrates a concern for efficiency and cost effectiveness.
Accepts suggestions for improved performance.
Maintains all instrumentation and supplies. Keeps inventory in working order and follows through immediately with the director for any repair or inventory concerns (OB, OR, ER).
Serves as clinical resource for physicians and other departments.
Serves as mentor or educational resource for new employees and students
Documents critical incidents when necessary.
Equipment – Assists in securing equipment to prevent theft and loss. Supplies – Minimizes supply wastage.
Facilities – promptly reports facility maintenance issues to appropriate personnel.
Welcomes and encourages new staff members and students.
Along with the Circulating Nurse, opens and prepares the sterile field, using aseptic technique at all times.
Reports all drains and packs to Circulating Nurse.
With the Circulating Nurse, maintains an accurate sponge and needle count, being aware at all times, the location of sponges and needles.
Adheres to safety precautions including hazardous wastes and proper sharps disposal.
Sorts dirty and clean instruments and transports them per policy to the contaminated area.
Uses appropriate cleaning substances as indicated by hospital safety and infection control standards.
Sterilizes all goods using appropriate flash/STERIS sterilization guidelines.
Notifies appropriate personnel of malfunctioning of autoclaves, which may have compromised sterility. Removes items for use as appropriate.
Keeps current in knowledge of appropriateness of processing and sterilization.
Keeps a log of autoclaves’ proper functioning.
Actively participates in the call schedule.
Communicates to supervisor any potential problems in regard to patient, procedure or surgeon.
Communicates effectively in regard to supply inventory.
Communicates effectively with other department staff regarding surgeon preference.
Completes all assigned tasks and duties accurately and timely.
Expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Assists with patient transportation as needed, following established safety guidelines.
Employee completes all tasks and duties accurately and timely within assigned shift. Demonstrates initiative to perform job duties autonomously.
Attends mandatory and other education offerings per department and hospital requirements. May assist with education on the unit.
Required qualifications for this position include:
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician program
2 years Working within PSMMC Peri-Op as an anesthesia technician, CPD technician or Endoscopy technician
Current BLS – Healthcare provider (must be AHA accredited).
DOH – Washington State registration
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Current National Certified Surgical Technician certification
2 years Working as a Surgical Technologist
